Neuro-Linguistic Programming

It’s the study of success and the science behind achievement!

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is the art of positive internal communication that provides the impetus to move forward. NLP examines the way in which we communicate with our senses and how that communication affects our success. NLP is a strategy for enhancing personal and professional development and achievement.

Science continually transforms the way we live. Therefore, it’s not that surprising that science has unleashed the key to ourselves – the key to being whatever we want to be, the key to achieving our goals easier and faster than before. Older, more traditional approaches to personal growth and achievement are very slow moving and are based on catharsis. It could take years of struggling with yourself to make meaningful changes. NLP offers a much more effective way of dealing with emotions and instilling changes. NLP studies how things take place inside you, the actual processes of thoughts and feelings and assists people in processing old memories in new ways. Unpleasant experiences are quickly transformed into positive resources.

NLP has been referred to as a shortcut to success. It enables you to copy and model human excellence. You learn how to break negative habits and learn new positive habits in a fraction of the time than you would expect. You can utilize the power of this new psychology to enhance your performance and attitude in any area of your life.

It may initially sound somewhat incredulous, but research has proven time and again that the main difference between individuals who are successful, and those struggling through life is the manner in which they communicate with themselves. With no exception, personal success is built on positive internal communication.

Linguistics involves the study of language, syntax and semantics. It is how we communicate to others verbally. Our word choice plays a major role in what we convey to others. For example, if someone says, “Don’t think about a pink elephant!” the first thing that pops into your mind is probably a pink elephant.

The reason this happens is that our minds have different processes for recognizing words like “can’t, not, stop.” When you tell a child “Don’t jump on the bed,” the child must first see themselves jumping on the bed, and then try to erase that picture. Changing your word choice to “the bed is for sleeping” makes the image very clear. Simply making these small changes will affect your communication processes. It’s easier said than done. Unfortunately, human nature tends to notice negative, rather than positive things. We have also been conditioned to communicate in the same fashion.

Fortunately, it is possible to change our communication style. Through daily practice and review of NLP techniques a positive approach will become a habit. NLP has discovered and proven that by consciously changing the way you think, you in fact change what you think and feel.

When your neurological processes combine with your linguistic capabilities you can create success for yourself. Do you know people who just can’t seem to motivate themselves or are constantly in a negative frame of mind? Those individuals may use negative self-talk-- speak internally to themselves in a derogatory manner. If you do this, you are undermining your own success. Many people do not realize that a powerful connection exists between the mind and the body. Changing your thought patterns will produce a different set of reactions and behaviors inside of yourself. Once you understand the mind/body connection, it can be used to your advantage.

Becoming skilled in NLP will:

  • allow you to do whatever you do reasonably well, VERY WELL

  • enable you to acquire skills and attitudes that you’ve always wanted but could not obtain

  • perfect your communication skills

In essence, you make sure that what you say and how you say it, is exactly how you want to be perceived. You are confident that the message you are sending is the one the listener is going to receive.

Imagine the endless possibilities where you can use your newly acquired communication skills:

  • more effective communication with your family

  • business transactions

  • networking

  • local merchants

  • neighbors

  • your boss

  • yourself

Created by an information scientist and psychologist at the University of California at Santa Cruz, NLP is credited with:

  • cutting U.S. Army training time in half

  • improving the performance of major sports starts and teams, such as the LA Lakers, Andre Agassi and the San Antonio Spurs

  • eliminating life long fears within minutes

  • forever altering the concept that improvement of skills, performance and emotional balance requires years of hard work

It’s no wonder this hi-tech psychology has been described as “magic in action.” However, it is science; it only looks like magic until we understand it. NLP is the new technology of achievement that is being used by people who are at the top and want to stay there!
